Update Check
JPGBoost can let you know a new version exists, without ever downloading or installing anything on its own. The feature is disabled by default and available on both tiers.
Enabling the update check
The feature is disabled by default and available in both the Free and Pro versions.
- Open Settings (⌘,) then the Updates tab.
- Check the activation box.
- The check will now run automatically each time the app starts.
A Check Now button also lets you trigger a one-off check without waiting for the next launch.
What the check does
JPGBoost compares the installed version number with the one published in a small remote version file. The comparison is done component by component, not as a simple text comparison: 1.10 is correctly recognized as newer than 1.9, and 1.2 as equivalent to 1.2.0.
If a newer version exists, the app shows a button to open the download page in your browser.
What the check doesn't do
Unlike an automatic update system, nothing is ever downloaded or installed by the app. You stay in control of when you install a new version, and you download it yourself from your browser.
Privacy
No information about your Mac, your files, or your usage is collected or transmitted during this check. No telemetry mechanism is used.
This is the same stance as the rest of the app: the local API is never exposed to the network, and the license is verified with no server on every launch (only activation and adding a device contact our license server once). See the privacy policy.
If it fails
If the check fails, for example due to no connection, the app remains fully usable. No feature depends on this check.
